The Algarve Region
Algarve is located in the south of Portugal, a well-known tourist area, with some of the most beautiful beaches in the Atlantic. The region is a favourite for sun-seekers from all over the world, offering natural landscapes, a rich folk heritage, and healthy gastronomy which are worth appreciating along with the pleasures of the sun and the sea. Algarve was part of the vast Roman Empire, boasting relevant cities as Balsa and Ossónoba, and was under the rule of the arab civilization for 5 centuries, reaching a high economic and cultural splendor. Re-incorporated into Christendom during the reign of King Afonso III, the old Moorish Al-Gharb languished until the fifteenth century, when it was revived by increased exploration of the African coast and the conquest of Morocco by Prince D. Henry. With the end of Lusitanian presence in the markets of Africa, the region declined once again and began the twentieth century as a rural area dedicated to nut farming , fishing and canning industry. Begining in the 60s, the development of tourism completely revived the region.
University of Algarve
The creation of the University of Algarve, in 1979, was an important milestone in the development strategy of the region. Comprising three campuses, Penha, Gambelas and Portimão, it offers excellent conditions for study, work, research and socialization to a population of over 10 000 students, 700 teachers and 400 employees. In the last 40 years, the University of Algarve (UAlg) has consolidated its organization and has faculties and institutes covering the Arts, Literature and History, Basic Sciences & Engineering, Life Science, Earth, Marine & Environment Science, and Economics, Management & Tourism.
