We are pleased to announce 8th Annual International Meeting of the Portuguese Society for Stem and Cell Therapies which will be held at the University of Algarve, Faro, on the 9th and 10th of May 2013. In line with meetings organized over the past seven years by the Portuguese Society for Stem and Cell Therapies, the symposium aims to gather together the Portuguese scientific, academic and medical communities as well as industries with interests in fundamental and applied research in stem cells, their development and use for cellular-based therapies, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
We also welcome our colleagues from the Portuguese Society for Developmental Biology (SPBD), who co-sponsor the panel on “Stem Cells and Development” with the hope that the event will bring members of both societies closer together in advancing this intersection between our fields.
The conference will include oral and poster sessions reporting current research in stem cells and their role in development, stem cell bioprocessing, cell reprogramming, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. We look forward to hearing our invited keynote speakers who are internationally recognized for their cutting edge research in these topics. Ibrahim Domian, from the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, USA, will present advances in cardiac developmental and stem cell biology and their implications for future cardiovascular medicine. Richard OC Oreffo, from the University of Southampton, UK, will focus on mechanisms of bone development, growth and regeneration in normal and pathological contexts. Juan A Bueren, (CIEMAT, Spain) will to present recent developments in cell therapy for Fanconi’s Anemia. Clemens van Blitterswijk (University of Twente, Netherlands) will present his research on tissue engineering and regenerative medicine and Sakis Mantalaris (Imperial College, UK) will present his work on approaches to reliably and reproducibly engineer tissues and organs for clinical applications.
We hope that many members of our Society and colleagues from both Portugal and abroad will be able to join us here in sunny Algarve for two full days of in depth presentations on current topics in the stem cell field and progress towards clinically relevant cellular therapies.
